Here’s our biggest tips for being in a relationship when you struggle with a mental illness:
1. Your significant other will not fix you. Whoever you date can (and should) absolutely help you. But do not expect to be magically cured the second you’re official.
2. You significant other should not make things worse. This seems obvious but a lot of people get so caught up in the relationship that their health takes a back seat. Make sure those in your life are improving your life.
3. You are still you with or without or significant other. You will still have your strengths and weaknesses whether or not this person is in your life. They will not solve your weakness nor ever take away your strengths.
Overall, your health is first. Always. Being in a relationship should help, not harm, and should definitely not just be a distraction. Find someone who builds you up, not tears you down.
id: This Image has a photograph of two people standing in the rain and kissing each other. It seems to be nighttime and there is a streetlight behind them, so you can only see the silhouettes of the two people. There is black and white texts over a semi-opaque green box. The text reads “The Fingerprint Project”, “Mental Health Awareness Month”, and “Being in a relationship”. /end id
