Mental Health During The Holidays

Writer: Emily FolkerEmily Folker

It’s the holiday season!

Usually, it’s a happy time filled with family and seasonal events. But, for some, it can be a time where your mental health gets the better of you. Lots of things can contribute to feeling this way.

Maybe you’ve lost a loved one, don’t have a good relationship with your family, or you may just get stressed with all the craziness happening around you.

Here are some important things to remember this holiday season:

1. Your health is the most important. — People, even those you love, may pressure you to take part in activities you don’t feel up for. You are not a bad person for needing to take care of yourself. Those who truly love you will understand.

2. Celebrate in the way that is best for you. — Don’t feel like you need to overload yourself with every little holiday experience. If you need to take the holidays slowly, that’s okay. Everyone celebrates differently.

3. Have a plan for your safety. — Make sure you have many sources of comfort. Make a list of those you can call for help, or even just to talk to. Don’t be afraid to call the Suicide Prevention Lifeline (tel: 1-800-273-8255) or take a trip to the Emergency Room. It may seem over-the-top, but it’s always good to have a backup plan.

4. Know that you’re not alone. — It may seem like everyone is having the time of their lives for the holidays, but people do not tend to show the harder side of things. Everyone struggles with holiday stress, and, for so many out there, the holidays is a very difficult time. Your emotions are valid, no matter how you think you “should” be feeling.

5. Have a good time! — If this means gathering with family, friends, or relaxing by yourself, do it. Everyone has their own idea of a good time.
