Reaching out is extremely difficult. Although mental illnesses are fairly common, they are still incredibly stigmatized. You may have friends that are struggling and are too afraid to seek out the help and support they need or tell even their closest relationships about what’s going on.
If you think something may be going on with someone in your life, don’t be afraid to talk to them about it. It may seem weird or awkward, but it can make a huge difference. Take the plunge, one conversation can save a life.
Depression is not always obvious but here are some common symptoms to look out for in your friends or family:
• loss of interest
• trouble sleeping
• eating and weight changes
• anger or irritability
• expressing negative thoughts
• suicidal ideals
• loss of confidence
It’s important to be able to recognize these things in order to be able to help your friends in their time of need.
Take some time today to learn about what mental health resources are available in your local area, so you may pass these along to someone in need!
