Real Self-care Tips

Writer: Emily FolkerEmily Folker

There are so many “self care” tips out there that never really seem to touch on steps for honest recovery.

Taking a nice bubble bath, getting hair done, going for a walk. These are all great things to do and wonderful was to relax during a mental break, but they are more of distractions than they are self-care.

Self care happens every day in the small cracks of life. It’s telling the bad thoughts in your mind that they’re wrong. It’s learning to think well of yourself instead of defaulting to self-hatred. It’s every little bit of recovery you accomplish every day, whether you realize it or not.

Our real self-care tips are:

• Talk to others about how you’re feeling. (friends, family, or trained physicians)

• Communicate with yourself. (i.e. journaling, meditation)

• Keep track of your progress, no matter how many ups or downs you take.

• Take care of your body and mind in the best way you can.

• Get a little bit of sunlight each day.

There are so many more out there, but don’t let anyone tell you that baths and naps will cure you. You will only be let down. Trust the process of recovery and take care of yourself and your friends.

There is black and white text over a semi-opaque green box. The text reads “The Fingerprint Project”, “Mental Health Awareness Month”, and “Real self-care tips”. /end id
