Responses From Others

Writer's picture: Emily FolkerEmily Folker

This month is all about mental health and breaking the stigma around it. Unfortunately, that’s easier said than done. There is a good chance that you may get some odd responses from people who know about your mental illness. Some may intentionally be hurtful while others don’t see the harm in what they say to you.

Something to remember is to fight these responses with kindness and education. Let them know how certain assumptions or questions can be upsetting to people. This way, they are learning for the next time this comes up in their lives.

If someone if intentionally upsetting you, however, the best thing to do is to ignore them, which is so hard to do. You’ll want to yell and scream in their face, but this will only encourage them. Block toxic people out of your life.

Depending on the people you have around you and their responses, you may feel alone at times. You are not. SO many people feel the same way you do and there are many many resources available. You matter and your life is worth living.
