Story Spotlight: Alysa Goethe

Writer: Emily FolkerEmily Folker

Today I wanted to highlight the experiences of my amazing sister, Alysa Goethe, the current Miss Greater Des Moines.

Alysa is an advocate for Type 1 Diabetes, being diagnosed herself at 11 years old. She has spent over 100 hours educating others about T1D as Miss Greater Des Moines!

Mental health can change drastically based on other health conditions someone may have. That’s why I wanted to share Alysa’s story of her mental health journey while managing T1D.

She says, “Diabetics are 2 to 3 times more likely to suffer from mental health conditions according to the CDC, yet we are just starting to open the conversation surrounding this. It is imperative to have more open conversations and more representation, because I know how much it helps me and my relationship with T1D.”

Thank you Alysa for allowing me to share your story and for advocating for those of us affected by a chronic illness.

Make sure to check out her podcast about T1D, titled “Not Your Type”!
